When Melodies Gather: Oral Art of the Mahra

Qaṣīda ghināʾiyya (“Sung Poem”)

The qaṣīda ghināʾiyya is a fairly recent phenomenon and largely imitative of cosmopolitan Yemeni sung poetry. Unlike the other genres contained in this collection, the qaṣīda ghināʾiyya would not be recognized as a genre as such by most Mahri speakers. Rather, it is only recognized by the cultural elite of al-Mahra, particularly its younger, more outward-looking poets.

For a detailed analysis of this genre of Mahri poetry, see Liebhaber, 2011b.
